Paris Agreement: EU publishes its proposal for ratification

  • 13 June 2016

Friday 10 June, the European Commission presented its proposal for ratification of the Paris Agreement, the first universal agreement in favor of the fight against global warming.

EU Commissioner for Climate Action and Energy Miguel Arias Cañete said: "After Paris, the EU is doing its homework. We are determined to maintain the momentum and spirit of Paris and ensure the early ratification – and the swift implementation - of this historic agreement. Today's proposal demonstrates our continued commitment to lead the global clean energy transition and build a modern, sustainable and more climate-friendly economy. I am confident that the European Parliament, Council and Member States will complete the respective ratification procedures promptly."

The Commission is also committed to provide Member States with targets to reduce emissions of greenhouse gases in the sectors not covered by the emissions trading system.

Philippe Desfossés, director ERAFP, responded to this ad:

" Since the Paris Agreement is a global milestone for enhancing global collective action and accelerating the global transformation to a low-carbon and climate resilient society.
It's time for action..... now Europe must prove it can deliver and have real impact.
As well as clear regulation on real driving test for cars a ratification as soon as possible would be appreciated by pension funds. "
